    • The Layne-Lain-Lane Genealogy book, by Floyd Benjamin Layne, mentions additional children: Lou and Sallie though no evidence apart from this book has been found. Notice also that this book lists Lou and Sally as the last two children of John Jr. and Esther (Kilgore) Layne. There was either some sort of mixup, or these children did not survive to adulthood.

  • Notes
    • Abraham is the oldest of his father’s children to survive well into old age in Marion County. He arrives, or is born in, Marion County, Tennessee in the early 1800s along with the rest of his family, eventually marrying Rebecca Kilgore, daughter of Stephen Clayton Kilgore. At least three of Abraham's siblings married Kilgore siblings, beginning a close relationship between these families that continues to this day. Abraham may have briefly settled around Victoria, Tennessee near his parents and siblings but several Marion county land entry records indicate that Abraham and his family moved into north Marion County in an area known as The Pocket (GNIS 1272431). Further confirmation of this move is found in a nearly forgotten cemetery near Gray’s creek (GNIS 1290838) where several family members were laid to rest.

We began our research, as we usually do, using the information found in the Layne-Lain-Lane genealogy book by Floyd Benjamin Layne (FBL). While this book is an invaluable resource for Layne family history, it is important to double check the information as inaccuracies are not uncommon and the information regarding Abraham and his family is no exception.

FBL indicates that Abraham and Rebecca had 13 children. 11 boys and 2 girls. He provides birth years for all but Joseph, and we reconciled this information with that found in census records which revealed several discrepancies. The first is William (b. 1835) who is not present in the 1850 census with Abraham and Rebecca. Also, given that the 1840 census was taken very late in the year, we would expect to find seven sons listed, but only six are found. There should either be an additional male between 5 and 9 (the one listed is likely David), or an additional male less than 5 years old (those listed are probably Hiram, Stephen, and Jackson). Additionally there are only two William Laynes found anywhere in the area in the 1850 census. One is the son of John Jr. and Esther (Kilgore) Layne born in 1833 and living with them in Grundy County. The other is the son of Stephen and Sina (Mason) Layne born around 1836 living in Marion county. It is this William that I believe FBL has incorrectly listed as Abraham and Rebecca’s.

Next, the 1830 census lists two daughters where we would only expect to see one and the 1840 census lists three daughters instead of the two we expect. This other daughter was likely born between Daniel and David, or around 1829. In 1850 three of Abraham’s children are no longer living with him, but do live within close proximity so we hoped to locate this missing daughter by looking for a female in her early 20s living close by in 1850, but no suitable candidate was found. Either this daughter did not survive to adulthood, or she has moved away from her family by 1850.

Finally there is the case of Joseph and Anderson. FBL provides no birth date for Joseph, but lists Anderson as born in 1844. No Joseph is found in any census records, but Anderson is present in both the 1850 and 1860 census records. “Anderson" is not present after 1860. In the 1900 census we find a Joseph, born in October 1844, and Sallie Layne with children matching those listed as Joseph’s in the Layne genealogy book and in 1910 Joseph is listed as Joe A Layne. While FBL claims that Joseph was killed in the battle of Chattanooga during the Civil War, we find him alive and well living with children born between 1878 and 1891. Given all this, it seems likely that Joe A is in fact Joseph Anderson born on October 24, 1844 and FBL somehow separated him into two different individuals.

Rather than the 11 boys and 2 girls found in the Layne genealogy book, we believe that Abraham and Rebecca actually had 9 boys and 3 girls that survived to adulthood or were at least present during the censuses of 1830, 1840, and 1850. Given the gap between Sallie and Hiram, it’s possible there were other children, perhaps even a William born in 1835, but we have been unable to find any record of them to this point.
