    • The Layne-Lain-Lane Genealogy book, by Floyd Benjamin Layne, mentions additional children: Lou and Sallie though no evidence apart from this book has been found. Notice also that this book lists Lou and Sally as the last two children of John Jr. and Esther (Kilgore) Layne. There was either some sort of mixup, or these children did not survive to adulthood.

  • Notes
    • Nancy is intriguing as one of the few women whose name appears prominently as the head of household or land owner in an age dominated primarily by men. The Layne-Lain-Lane genealogy book by Floyd Benjamin Layne gives us very little to go on mentioning that she married “Hiram” Kilgore. There is no Hiram Kilgore in Marion County in 1830 and, given that many of her siblings married children of Stephen Clayton and Rebecca (Salyer) Kilgore, it’s probable she did as well. The 1830 Marion County census lists Charles Kilgore with household members whose sex and ages agree with those we expect to find for Nancy’s family. This, along with fact that Charles is not recorded in the 1840 census but Nancy Kilgore is, supports the notion that Nancy was married to Charles.

Unfortunately, the 1830 and 1840 census records only list the names of the head of the household so we had to rely on information provided by other researchers as a starting point. Louisa, James, and Alexander are living with Nancy in 1850 so we can be fairly certain these are her children. We also found evidence connecting Lucinda, Elizabeth, and Mary. Of Robert, John K, and Craven, the record is less clear. Other researchers have listed them and there is strong circumstantial evidence to support this, but official records have not yet been found.

We believe that Charles has died sometime before 1833 as Nancy is found in January of 1833 in the Marion County Land Entry book. It is believed that sometime after Charles death that she has relocated near her brother Daniel as she appears in the 1840 Warren County census living just four households away. Records indicate that this area would have been near present day Palmer, Tennessee in Grundy County. Also of note in the 1840 census, are 4 “free colored persons” living with Nancy and her children. They were a boy and two girls under the age of 10 and a young woman between the age of 10 and 23. I’m not certain what the relationship was with Nancy and her family and the 1840 census does not list names so we’ve no way of knowing who they might have been and where they ended up.

In the 1850 census Nancy is found in the 12th District of Marion County. This district is sometimes described as the scattering or those that were missed on the initial enumeration. Information found in the description of Tennessee land warrant #10806 places her close to her brother Abraham by 1849 which would have been District 4. Careful study of these land warrants have allowed us to locate Nancy’s property, near Griffith Creek in Marion County, with fairly high degree of accuracy and confidence. Nancy appears nearby Abraham in both 1860 and 1870 so we believe that Nancy lived out her remaining days in this area.

Nancy eventually remarried on Christmas Eve in 1859 to James Jackson after having spent the proceeding 25 years raising her nine children independently. In 1860 only her daughter Louisa is living with her and James. By 1870 it is just her and James. Nancy and James were actually counted twice in the 1870 census. They are listed in both District 3 and District 4. I believe one or both may have been visiting friends or family in the valley while the 1870 census was underway.

The 1870 census is the last one that Nancy appears in having lived 73 years. Neither James or Nancy are found in the 1880 census and it’s likely that they had both passed away before then. No grave location has been found for Nancy, but there is a tiny forgotten cemetery off Gray’s Creek Road where her brother Abraham lived which may be where she and her brother were laid to rest.
