• Notes

  Born: While Davidson's headstone would seem to leave little doubt as to the date of his birth, there is more to it than meets the eye. First, the 1850 census lists Davidson as 10 months old. It's difficult to mistake a 2 or 3 year old for a 10 month old. Also, wife Mary's headstone lists her birthday as 1847 but early census evidence points to a 1849 birth date. Also if Mary were born in 1847 that would mean she was born 3 months after her brother Henry Miller whose birthday is well known. A neat trick. At some point, both Davidson and Mary's census data jump by a couple of years. In 1870 Davidson and Mary are both listed as 21. In 1880, they are 32 & 33 respectively. They are listed as born in Sep 1847 and Feb 1847 in the 1900 census. What I believe may have happened is that Davidson and Mary both knew they were born in the same year, but at some point a sloppily jotted 9 was read as a 7 sometime after 1870 and that became the accepted year of birth even for them.
