- The Lane genealogy book lists Spencer, son of John and Amanda, as having married first an unknown Pankey with whom they had a son named "Dock" Bryant Layne. It then goes on to say he next marries Belle Cartwright and they have the following children William, Laura, Spencer Jr, Mary Ann, Ida.
While we find Spencer in 1870 and 1880 with parents John and Amanda as expected, he is not found in later censuses. At least not with the children we would expect if using the Lane genealogy book as a guide. Confusing matters is the existence of another Spencer born around the same time. This other Spencer is the son of Andrew Jackson and Harriet (Bryant) Layne. John and Amanda's son seems to consistently use his middle initial "H" which makes it a little easier to distinguish between the two.
In 1910, 1920, and 1930 there is a Spencer H Layne married to Belle living in Sebastian County, Arkansas. Belle Cartwright is who Spencer is supposed to be married to, but none of these census returns list any children. In 1900 there is a Samuel H and Belle Layne living in Anderson County, Tennessee along with a 7 year old daughter, Hattie. I believe this family to be the same. In fact, in Arkansas in 1910 next door to Spencer and Belle lives 17 year old "Hettie" Lewis married to Walter.
Additional research on Belle indicates that she was from Warren County, Tennessee and she and Spencer married around 1893. They then moved to Anderson County, Tennessee, then later Sebastian County, Arkansas. They appear to have finally settled around San Diego, California sometime in the late 1930s. In 1940, Liza Jane Bell Layne is living with a younger sister Laura (Cartwright) Wiza in San Diego (both born in Tennessee), which agrees with the 1880 census in Warren County, Tennessee where we find both Belle and Laura with parents Samuel and Clarisa (Smith) Cartwright.
