  Of John almost nothing is known. His name does not appear in any census or other document that would confirm his name or relationship to his parents John and Esther (Kilgore) Layne. The 1830 and 1840 census does tell us that John Jr. had a son born after Abraham K and before William H, and we suppose that it must be John III as recorded in the Layne-Lain-Lane genealogy book by Floyd Benjamin Layne. There are two possibilities and in either case John may have drifted around a bit as both of these possibilities only appear in census records once after 1840. The closest match is the John Lane, born 1831, that appears in the 1880 census. This John is living with William Kilgore in District 8 of Grundy County. This district would not have been terribly distant from his parents living to the south in District 7. In addition, William had married Polly Layne, though she died well before 1880. The other possibility is "Jas W Lane". James appears only once in census records, specifically the 1860 census in District 5 of Grundy County. He is married to Elizabeth and their children are Sarah (9), John (5), and Preston (1). John (or James W) has a brother named Preston, and of course his father John.
