  • Notes
    • We cannot be certain that Anderson is indeed the Joseph A Layne found in the 1910 census and buried at Burkett Chapel however there are surprisingly few candidates. The only other likely candidate is the son of Stephen and Sina (Mason) Layne, but the Layne genealogy book lists that Joseph as killed during the Civil War. There are many inconsistencies in that book so we looked at census records in hopes of finding siblings or other close relatives living nearby, but without any success.

For example, in 1880 Joseph and Sarah (Sallie) are living in Sequatchie county so we tried to find a connection to other Laynes in the area but the Sequatchie county Laynes are exclusively from the Daniel (1810) and Isaac (1813) branches. There are no representatives from Abraham's or David's branches as we hoped to find.

Sarah's family at least seems to have been associated with Daniel Layne's branch as we find the Lathrums living basically next door in the 1860 census. Perhaps it is for this reason that Joseph and Sarah are found in Sequatchie county from 1880 onwards.

It is also curious that the Layne genealogy book lists both Joseph and Anderson as children of Abraham, but only Anderson is found in the 1850 and 1860 census records. It seems that Joseph Anderson may have been recorded as two separate individuals.

All this is to say that it's possible that all the information related to Joseph Anderson Layne has been recorded here correctly, but additional research is needed before that can be stated definitively.
