Notice also that this book lists Lou and Sally as the last two children of John Jr. and Esther (Kilgore) Layne. There was either some sort of mixup, or these children did not survive to adulthood.

  • Notes
    • 1850 Grundy Co., TN census a _____ Layne born 1833 is shown in Daniel & Anna Bryant Layne family as "J" or "I" age 17; 1860 census shows living with Daniel: Barbara Layne, widow of John Lain Sr and Barbara Lavan, widow daughter of Isaac (Daniel's brother); also with Daniel 1860 was George A Lane born 1857 (not necessarily Daniel's son)

    Residence:
    • See father for source citations
    • Daniel is listed as owning his own land in the 1836 tax records.

    Died:
    • As Daniel passed roughly two months after the 1900 Census was taken I don't think it too much of a stretch to say he died in or near his home.

Living with John Lain Sr. Though Daniel isn't mentioned by name, the age group is correct for (15-20)

    2. [S17] TN, Early Tax List Records, 1783-1895 (1836 District 4, Marion County), (Tennessee State Library and Archives), page 182.
The other Laynes (Lane) included in this list match those we'd expect to find if this is our Daniel. Besides Daniel, there is Abraham (brother), David (brother), Stephen (nephew), John Sr. (father), John Jr. (brother), William Jr (nephew?), William Sr (brother?) as well as Nancy Kilgore (sister)

William Sr., and Jr is a curiosity though. David's son William would have been twenty years old at this time, so perhaps he is listed as William Lane Jr to make him distinct from the other.

      Males <5: 3, 5<10: 2, 20<30: 1
      Females: 20<30: 1, 60<70: 1

Female 60<70 is likely Barbara (DeVault) Layne living with Daniel by this time.

Daniel Lane appears on several of the records in this collection including entries 1824, 5031, 8371, 9147, 10136, 11592 and 11601. While these are likely this Daniel, entries 8371, 9147 and 11601 are noteworthy as they mention additional relatives.

    5. [S19] NC and TN, Early Land Records, 1753-1931 (Mtn. Dist), (Tennessee State Library and Archives, Nashville, Tenn.), entry 9147, pages 6-9 (Book U).

      Improved land: 50 acres
      Unimproved land: 10,400 acres

Value of farming implements and Machinery: $65

      Value of Animals slaughtered: $80

This seems like a crazy amount of land and Daniel's acreage is indicated as 2,000 by 1860. To get an idea how much land 10,400 acres is, it would equal nearly 5% of all the land in Grundy County.

My best guess for the location this property is somewhere just west of Burkett Chapel Cemetery in Marion County, Tennessee

    9. [S8] 1860 US Census, Tennessee, Grundy, District 5, (National Archives, Washington, D.C), page 24.
The district changes from 4 in the 1850 census to 5 in the 1860 census, but I don't believe Daniel moved. Rather the districts were redrawn or lived close to a boundary between districts.
